Belkorp is seeking applications from suitable candidates to join our team as Senior Legal Counsel. Reporting to the Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, this position works closely with senior executives and operating businesses and will require the successful candidate to use their legal and business skills to excel at the position. The role also entails assistance with business development to contribute to the growth of the organization. Candidates must possess strong interpersonal skills and work well with others. Salary is commensurate with experience, with a target base range of $215,000 to $235,000. Compensation also includes a great benefits package including a company-matched RRSP program.

Duties:

  • Act as primary legal support and business partner to real estate, environmental services, and John Deere business units.
  • Review, research, and draft a broad range of corporate and commercial contracts for Belkorp and its subsidiaries. Given the broad scope of Belkorp’s activities, assistance from outside counsel may be required in certain circumstances.
  • Provide legal advice and support to Belkorp and its subsidiaries relating generally to corporate finance, commercial real estate, mergers and acquisitions, and corporate commercial matters.
  • Participate in and often lead the negotiation of agreements with third parties.
  • Manage litigation strategy and external legal counsel resources as may be required.
  • Work with external counsel to research and advise on agreements, structures, and acquisitions.
  • Provide legal advice and support to senior management as directed.
  • Lead the drafting, maintenance, and development of written policies, processes, and procedures to ensure regulatory compliance and industry best practices.
  • Develop and maintain corporate and partnership records for Belkorp and its subsidiaries and work with outside providers to maintain corporate filings.
  • Ensure training and compliance with all applicable laws across Belkorp and its subsidiaries.
  • Be a knowledgeable resource to assist in problem solving for new or novel issues.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable laws and evolving regulatory requirements across jurisdictions.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • 7–10 years of corporate and commercial experience, preferably at a recognized law firm, or a combination of law firm and in-house experience.
  • A law degree from an accredited university.
  • Admitted to a recognized bar in Canada or the United States.
  • Prior experience in commercial real estate an asset.
  • Ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships and to interact with various business units, outside counsel, and senior executives.
  • Comprehensive understanding of legal risk and related risk management strategies.
  • Sound business judgment with demonstrated experience advising investment teams and senior leadership.
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to provide practical, solutions-oriented legal advice.
  • Demonstrated experience providing successful counsel to all levels of corporate leadership.
  • Team player with a willingness to learn and a great attitude.
  • Strong analytical skills required to organize and analyze multiple, complex matters.
  • Ability to voice and defend opinions.
  • Practical, results-oriented approach combined with strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Location: West Broadway & Granville, Vancouver (in office). Some travel may be required.
