BC Ferries is one of the largest ferry operators in the world and a critical component of British Columbia’s transportation infrastructure, connecting coastal communities, businesses, and economies across the province. As a publicly owned organization, BC Ferries operates in a highly regulated environment and plays a central role in supporting mobility, commerce, and public service delivery throughout British Columbia.
BC Ferries is seeking an experienced Senior Regulatory Legal Counsel to join its legal team in Victoria. This is a high impact role that sits at the intersection of regulation, corporate governance, and public interest within one of the province’s most essential public service organizations. Reporting to the General Counsel, and working closely with senior leadership, this role offers the opportunity to influence major regulatory, operational, and infrastructure initiatives that directly affect coastal communities across the province.
In this role, you will take carriage of all regulatory matters arising under the Coastal Ferry Act and the Coastal Ferry Services Contract. This includes leading complex regulatory filings such as performance term submissions, major capital applications, and relief requests, as well as advising on compliance obligations tied to provincial oversight. You will develop and implement regulatory strategies that align BC Ferries’ operational objectives with its statutory and contractual mandates, while ensuring compliance with applicable provincial and federal requirements, including lobbying legislation and public sector governance frameworks. You will also provide legal support across a wide range of matters, including commercial contracting, real property issues, litigation management, and enterprise risk.
The ideal candidate will bring approximately five to nine years of legal experience, including meaningful regulatory experience in a public sector or highly regulated environment. You must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia. Strong judgment, strategic thinking, and the ability to communicate complex legal and regulatory issues clearly to non legal stakeholders are essential.
This is a rare opportunity to join a sophisticated and collaborative legal department at a time of significant regulatory activity and capital investment. The work is substantive, visible, and consequential, with a direct impact on governance, infrastructure, and the provincial economy.
